HSE asserts its beliefthat Sheffield Teaching Hospital is the only economic operator in the EU that is capable of supporting HSE inrespect of delivering the service required. The work delivered by physicians to HSE requires a unique combination of both medical expertise (up to dateand relevant to real clinical situations through continued medical practice and diagnosis) coupled with a deepunderstanding of the regulatory and policy aims of the HSE. The roles do not lend themselves to a 'pool of different medics' doing the work on a 'who is available' basisas the Medical Advisers actively contribute and are instrumental to the wider occupational health work ofHSE. They play a key role in governance and delivering the 'clinical lead' function, including taking the leadon regulatory aspects of medical and health work, scientific and research activity or revalidation and appraisalaspects of HSE's medical activity. This integrated approach of maintaining hands-on clinical knowledge coupledto regulatory knowledge is vital for HSE to deliver its role and act as the government's chief occupational healthadviser"
