Network stability has historically been provided by synchronous generators such as gas turbines; however, in regions where more asynchronous generation is present, network stability becomes problematic. This is due to the lack of an inherent capability to provide stability in intermittent generators such as wind farms. The Western Isles network is an example of a region where we need an alternative source of stability during planned outages and fault conditions. To address this requirement, SSEN are tendering for the provision of a Stability Flexibility Service for the Western Isles.
