As such, Northern Trains Limited (NTL) is obligated to maintain these systems to ensure continued compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements. The systems are proprietary to the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), as such the contract is required to ensure that the back-office and hosting support remains active. These services are bespoke to the OEM and protected by intellectual property rights (IPR), limiting Northern's ability to seek alternative solutions. A secondary aspect of the contract covers the legacy fleet of approximately 260 units. Although these trains are fitted with OEM-specific hardware, the software has not gone live across these fleets. Northern is not in a position to undertake a full-scale replacement due to the high cost and potential disruption to passenger services.
