The software is integral to operation of the systems and affects a number of SPS activities including call monitoring, tariff management, and call charge reconciliation back to individual prisoners. Redwood also hold stocks of key spare parts, pin-phone telephone instruments and components to support in-service maintenance. The age of the system (7 years) means that such items are not generally and readily available in the market. There are no organisations licenced or authorized by Redwood (or known to be in the market) to support and maintain its systems. The supplier provides 24/7 call-out and planned preventative maintenance support for the prisoner telephony systems within SPS prisons across Scotland. The maintenance staff require to undergo specific security checks to enable them to work in prisons.
