"description": "Award against framework: When investigating the neurobiology of memory, one key experimental method is to record what happens in brains at the level of single neurons. This has historically been performed with electrodes implanted into brain tissue; however, limitations of this technique include relatively low numbers of neurons that can be recorded from simultaneously and technical complexity. There are many important scientific questions that require the study of larger neuronal populations and to accomplish this, many leaders in the field have turned to calcium imaging of brain tissues. Calcium imaging is a powerful tool that allows the sampling of large populations of neurons in the brain with the resolution of a single neuron. Until recently, calcium imaging could not be carried out in freely moving specimens but with the advent of very small light microscopes (microendoscope) that can be chronically fixed atop the head, this is now an extremely advantageous technique for examining neural populations during the different stages of memory processing. This technique will allow us to tackle specific research questions relating to learning and memory that are documented in our current Wellcome Trust grant proposal and require the use of this calcium imaging technique.
