"description": "Seafood Scotland is a trade organisation set up in 1999 by the main representatives of the Scottish seafood industry, to market, promote and develop responsibly caught Scottish seafood in order to maximise the value return to industry. The organisation works closely with all sectors of the Scottish seafood supply chain, from catching and processing, through to retail, food service and consumption. The purpose of this independent study is to review the support function that Seafood Scotland provides to the Scottish seafood sector. The requirement is to define the strategic ambition of the sector and match the ambition by implementing the necessary resources required.",

The requirement is to define the strategic ambition of the sector and match the ambition by implementing the necessary resources required. Seafood Scotland will shortly be launching a seafood sector action plan in response to the food and drink industry strategy; Ambition 2030. This will be a root and branch review of all potential opportunities and challenges facing this sector, creating an action plan for growth to 2030. The action plan will take a focused, sectorial view on the actions required to fulfil the aim of Ambition 2030; to double the turnover of food and drink within Scotland by 2030 and will act as a challenge to industry. This will outline the activity required by the Scottish Food and Drink Industry, Seafood Scotland, the Scotland Food and Drink Partnership and Government Agencies to grow the value of seafood sector in Scotland. Our aim is to produce a compelling and positive vision for where the seafood sector could be in 2030. The accompanying action plan will set out the roadmap for the sector to make an important financial contribution towards Ambition 2030. In order to be able to achieve the vision set out in the action plan industry needs secure long-term funding to promote Scottish seafood both at home and abroad, strengthen our brand and provide guidance and support to individual businesses wishing to take advantage of any new opportunities that arise. At present, the funding of Seafood Scotland is uncertain and inflexible relying heavily on Government support and EMFF project funding; which at this stage cannot be relied upon in a post Brexit environment. This model has also at times undermined efforts to market Scottish seafood to its full potential and puts in doubt, going forward, the support available to those businesses wishing to utilise the services that Seafood Scotland provides whether that be at home or abroad. The world in which Seafood Scotland operates has completely changed since its inception in 1999. The company was set up by industry to provide support to the catching and processing sectors in an era when over supply and poor prices were prevalent. It now operates in a cross-sectoral environment that includes aquaculture, where quality and provenance are key and this needs to be reflected in the business model going forward. Given the political and changing environment conducting an independent strategic review of the support function provided by Seafood Scotland will determine the best structure, activities and funding mechanisms for a sector-wide support organisation to take the seafood industry forward to reach its potential and contribute fully to Ambition 2030.",
