Within the UK and Europe we measure resuscitation against Resuscitation Council UK guidelines. This is the only manikin to allow us to do so. The SimMan 3G is designed to look gender neutral. The manikin has interchangeable genitalia which alongside the neutrality of the whole body appearance, allows for a more realistic male/female patient. The Resusci Anne Simulator is designed to be used directly with everyday medical equipment e.g. stethoscopes and monitoring equipment such as defibrillators. This allows seamless integrated assessment and management of the 'patient'. Maintaining scenario fidelity allows practice and mastery of complex skills that will assist the learners in performing these time critical skills in a safe and controlled manner in the clinical environment. The manikin required for delivery of our resuscitation teaching must be able to allow the users to demonstrate essential skills, both the simple and the complex. Certain simple procedures such as head tilt/chin lift and jaw thrust need to be automatically logged, thereby allowing staff to focus on more complex procedures and interactions being carried out during the sessions, rather than the performance of basic tasks. The University have been using five simulation manikins originally procured through Laerdal Medical Limited to teach undergraduate medical students in the Chancellor's Building Clinical Skills Centre for the past 7 years. These manikins are 1 x SimMan Essential and 4 x MegaCode Kelly's. During this same 7 year period, NHS Lothian have also been making use of the University's manikins to train their doctors and nurses, as well as procuring some of their own for their other hospital sites (Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, Western General Hospital and St John's Hospital). During the main teaching blocks of the first few years, we would average approximately 1 half-day simulation session per week, however this has now increased to an average of approximately 3 half-day sessions per week, so with this in mind and due to the age and condition of the existing manikins, it has now become necessary to replace them. To ensure the best student/trainee/teacher experience during the simulation sessions, it is important that the software associated with the five manikins is the same, therefore it is not possible for us to purchase individual manikins from different companies. Over the past 2 years, there has been an increase in our interdisciplinary teaching, where we include both medical and nursing students within our simulation sessions. This requires the manikins to be capable of replicating situations/scenarios as well as receive treatment which is appropriate to both specialties. Due to the way our simulation teaching has developed over the years and having been able to evaluate the full functionality of the manikins we currently own, it has become clear that there are a few functions that are lacking with the SimMan Essential and MegaCode Kelly's, but also that the MegaCode Kelly's have a lot of additional functionality that we don't make use of.
