Dams should be built at intervals between 6m and 20m. For full height dams brash material should be cleared away from the dam site, and a key cut out on the sides and base to ensure a good water tight seal. Suitable un-oxidised peaty material to construct the dam should be obtained from the near vicinity, without compromising the viability of other dams nearby, and where peat can be borrowed without too much disruption of the crushed brash (which should again be left lying below the original surface).
