This sites is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. This designation is due to the raised bog habitat and associated species communities on the site. The wider area comprises a mix of raised bog, blanket peat bog and intermediate peatland that provide a highly important habitat in the region, supporting a number of rare plant and animal species. Fundamental to enhancement of the site is restoration of the natural hydrology, which has been disturbed by man-made drainage channels. The work proposed in this contract aims to re-wet the site by damming these drains, retaining water on the site and raising the water table resulting in long term improvement to the raised bog habitat.
