Brunstane Primary School is a post war era primary school building in Brunstane, northeast Edinburgh. The retrofit of the school proposes a fabric first approach to reduce energy consumption which is critical given the climate emergency we are now facing. The existing school consists of a 3 storey teaching block, referred to as the 'tower' and a single storey administration, amenity and infant block. The tower is a masonry wall / precast concrete floor and roof construction. The single storey is of masonry wall construction with suspended timber floors. The roof is a 'Trofdek' trapezoidal plywood cassette structure. Structural surveys of these elements have been carried out as part of the design development.
