## Summary

The UK Shared Business Services Limited (UK SBS) is currently managing an open procurement process for the 'Polar Sediment Core Facility' project for the British Antarctic Survey (BAS). The tender seeks to enhance the refrigeration plant and cold room structures, facilitating the completion of phase 3 of the Polar Marine Aquarium project. Proposals must be submitted by 11:00 A.M. on 9th December 2019, with a total contract value of approximately £420,000. The contract period is scheduled to commence on 3rd February 2020 and concludes on 29th May 2020, with a primary focus on construction and engineering services based in Cambridge (CB3 0ET).

This tender presents a significant opportunity for businesses specialising in environmentally friendly cooling and refrigeration technologies. Companies experienced in energy-efficient construction and engineering solutions would be particularly well-suited to compete. With a strong emphasis on using natural refrigerants and carbon reduction strategies, this project aligns with sustainable practices, making it an ideal fit for innovative SMEs looking to expand their portfolio in the public sector.

## Notice

The final date and time for submission of bids is Monday December 9th at 11.00 A.M. DO NOT apply directly to the buyer. All tender information MUST be submitted through the Delta eSourcing Portal. Brief Description of Requirement. The refrigeration plant and cold room structures are at the end of their lifespan, resulting in difficulty maintaining reliability. The risk is system breakdown and loss of valuable and irreplaceable samples. The specification will address the methodology to meet the project objectives, which are completion of phase 3 PSCR of the Polar Marine Aquarium project, completing the provision of a modern energy-efficient and environmentally friendly science facility. The current setup of the science facility comprises the following areas: * Two cold rooms used for core storage designed to control temperature at +4degC * A suite of laboratories used to process the sediment core samples * Storage area and mezzanine for combined storage of sampling equipment and engineering materials. The existing facility represents high percentage of electricity used at the BAS Cambridge site. The current project presents a unique opportunity for BAS to initiate future proofing the science facilities that require cooling and refrigeration and remove HFCs from the respective systems. The preferred option is the use of natural refrigerant cooling system and in particular CO2-based cooling and refrigeration. Delivering a sustainable and efficient natural refrigerant system is a priority on this project and will facilitate BAS to meet its carbon reduction target. Note: the existing installation requires considerable manual handling, so understanding these limitations and creating a design which improves on this is important to the success of the project. Please ensure you review all attached information to ensure understanding of this requirement. All attachments can be found with the Document Uploads tab within the Delta eSourcing Portal.
