## Summary

The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority has awarded a contract for the ExCALIBUR Fusion Modelling System under the project NEPTUNE. The procurement process aimed to redesign simulation codes for future supercomputer architectures. The procurement stage was classified as an "award", with a contract period starting on October 11, 2022, and ending on February 29, 2024. The tender had a minimum value of £100,000 and a final value of £135,000, using an open procedure for goods procurement.

This contract presents business opportunities for companies specializing in software development, experimental development services, and research and development. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are particularly suited for this opportunity. The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority acted as the buying organisation, and the procurement was suitable for SMEs, emphasizing innovation and future-proof solutions for the UK science sector.

## Notice

Radical changes to supercomputer architectures are on the horizon. The current simulation codes, that much of UK science relies upon, are designed for current supercomputer architectures. These codes will, at best, not be able to fully exploit the power that the supercomputers of the mid-2020s will deliver; at worst, they will run slower on those machines than they do now. Future computers will be more energy efficient and so the longer we rely upon the current approach, the more expensive the solution will be. Therefore, it is essential that we invest now in redesigning those simulation codes so that they perform well on the future generations of supercomputers.
