## Summary

The Environment Agency has awarded a contract for the project titled "RDE305 Shellfish Nutrient Cycling Study" as part of the Marine Natural Capital Ecosystem Assessment Programme. The procurement stage was selective, with a call-off from a framework agreement. The contract period is from August 18, 2023, to March 31, 2024. The project falls under the services category and focuses on research and development consultancy services related to shellfish filtration rates. The procurement entity is the Environment Agency, based in London, UK.

This awarded contract by the Environment Agency presents an opportunity for businesses involved in research and development consultancy services to engage in the study of shellfish nutrient cycling. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with expertise in marine ecosystem assessment and research are well-suited to compete for this tender. Understanding shellfish filtration rates and their impact on nitrogen/chlorophyll removal presents a unique avenue for businesses to contribute to the assessment of ecosystem services in estuarine and coastal habitats. The project aims to enhance the understanding of shellfish natural capital assets beyond their traditional role as food sources, providing a fertile ground for service innovation and research collaboration.

## Notice

As part of Year 2 of the Marine Natural Capital Ecosystem Assessment Programme (mNCEA), the Environment Agency are running a project called the Land-Sea Interface (LSI), which aims to improve the evidence of ecosystem services in key estuarine and coastal habitats, such as saltmarsh, seagrass and shellfish beds. This specific project aims to address the evidence gap in assessing different shellfish's filtration rates. It aims ascertain the ability of nitrogen/chlorophyll removal by the shellfish and then link these outputs into Combined Phytoplankton- Macroalgae (CPM) model. This will enable us to better understand the full range of services and benefits provided by our shellfish natural capital assets, beyond their role as food provision for humans.
