## Summary

The Business Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) is conducting a tender for the "Advanced Modular Reactors (AMR), Research, Development and Demonstration Programme - Phase A Competition". This initiative, supported by a £385 million fund, aims to showcase High Temperature Gas Reactor (HTGR) technology by the early 2030s, aligning with the UK’s Net Zero goals for 2050. The tender, classified under the services procurement category, is currently at the tender stage, with submissions due by 2pm on 1 June 2022. Contracts are expected to commence in the week beginning 11 July 2022, and the completion date for Phase A is set for 13 January 2023.

This tender presents significant growth opportunities for businesses, particularly those specialising in advanced nuclear technology, clean energy innovation, and research and development services. Companies that focus on High Temperature Gas Reactor technologies or those with expertise in Coated Particle Fuel development would be ideally suited to compete for funding. The programme encourages participation from small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and voluntary and community sector organisations, making it an inclusive opportunity for innovators in the clean energy sector.

## Notice

As part of the PS385m Advanced Nuclear Fund, the AMR RD&D programme aims to demonstrate High Temperature Gas Reactor (HTGR) technology by the early 2030s, in time for any potential commercial AMRs to support Net Zero by 2050. This fund is aligned with the Department's PS1 billion Net Zero Innovation Portfolio (NZIP) which aims to accelerate the commercialisation of innovative clean energy technologies and processes through the 2020s and 2030s. This HTGR demonstration, which will be sited in the UK, should be shaped by end-user requirements, and should incentivise private investment in HTGRs by removing technical risk. It should have innovation at the centre of its design, build, and application. Through a pre-commercial, fully funded procurement Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI), this Phase A competition aims to fund up to 6 Pre-FEED (Front End Engineering Design) studies across two key technology lots. These are: Lot 1: Reactor Demonstration (up to 4 Pre-FEED studies will be awarded) for projects developing Advanced Modular HTGR technologies, with up to PS500k available for each project. Lot 2: Fuel Demonstration (up to 2 Pre-FEED studies will be awarded) for projects developing Coated Particle Fuel (CPF) for HTGR technologies, with up to PS250k available for each project.
