## Summary

The procurement process involves the Defra Network eTendering Portal, which is seeking research consultancy services titled "Batteries - Research to identify and address gaps in existing batteries data relevant to the ongoing policy review." This initiative falls within the environmental sector, aiming at addressing the treatment and management of portable batteries to support a circular economy. The tender is currently at the active stage and is being conducted through an open procurement method. The tender period closes on 26 August 2022, while the contract runs from 6 September 2022 to 31 March 2023, with a total contract value of £90,000. The project invites proposals from a broad geographical area, including the UK and overseas territories.

This tender presents significant opportunities for businesses focused on research and consultancy related to environmental practices, particularly those specialising in waste management, recycling, and sustainability. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are particularly well-suited to compete for this contract, as the tender encourages participation from them. Companies with expertise in data collection, policy analysis, and circular economy strategies will find this opportunity aligned with their capabilities, thus potentially enhancing their market presence and contributing to important environmental initiatives.

## Notice

DEFRA will use the Batteries Review to explore ways to minimise portable batteries going to landfill, encourage collection and treatment of Batteries (re-use, recycle, safe disposal) through EPR (including providing a supportive framework for the development of processing infrastructure), to correct the inequal treatment of producers selling in the UK with those selling through online market platforms, maximise value from our resources and minimise waste through the circular use of materials and to retain Critical Raw Materials (CRMs). The objective of this research project is to gather quantitative evidence and explore ways of increasing collection and proper treatment of portable batteries, consider revisions to the producer responsibility obligations for industrial (including electric vehicle) and automotive batteries and other measures to support a circular economy for batteries. The aim of the research is to gather quantitative evidence needed for the Impact Assessment of the Batteries Reform.
