## Summary

The Met Office is seeking a supplier for Marine Satellite Data Communication Service. The procurement process has reached the 'award' stage. The contract involves providing satellite communication services to transmit marine observation data across the United Kingdom. The tender has a value of GBP 400,000 and the contract period is from October 2, 2023, to September 30, 2025.

This tender offers business growth opportunities for companies providing telephone and data transmission services. The procurement method is an open procedure, creating a level playing field for suitable suppliers. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are encouraged to participate. Interested businesses should consider the technical requirements and the service provider's ability to meet the specific communication needs of the Met Office in marine environments.

## Notice

The Met Office operates a network of c.75 weather stations in the marine environment across buoys, ships and other remote platforms or islands - these are deployed in nearshore waters and the Atlantic Ocean, with a few ship stations travelling further afield. The network relies upon satellite communications to ensure continued timely submission of essential marine observation data, with all stations hosting an Autonomous Marine Observing System (AMOS2X) equipped with an Iridium short burst data (SBD) modem. Our contract with our current satellite communications supplier is due to expire, the objective of this procurement therefore, is to identify a satellite communication network and airtime service provider in order to continue to be able to transfer observational data from remote marine stations to our data ingestion system via Iridium service provider generated emails.
