## Summary

The Department for Education is seeking proposals for a study titled "The relationship between mental health and social mobility". This research initiative falls under the social work and related services category, specifically aimed at exploring the connections between mental health issues and social mobility in the UK. The procurement process is currently at the tender stage, with submissions due by 3rd May 2019. The contract is expected to commence on 3rd June 2019 and will run until 31st March 2020, with a total contract value estimated at £100,000, and a minimum bid value of £50,000. Bidders can deliver their services across various locations, including the United Kingdom and overseas territories.

This tender presents a great opportunity for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and voluntary, community and social enterprises (VCSEs) that specialise in social research, mental health, or related fields. Businesses capable of conducting thorough studies and providing insightful data on the interplay between mental health and social mobility will be well-positioned to compete. By engaging in this process, successful applicants could enhance their visibility in the public sector while contributing valuable knowledge that can influence social policies in the UK.

## Notice

There is an increasing amount of research conducted into mental health, its potential causes and the impact it can have on people's lives. However, there is a gap in understanding the links between mental health and social mobility: is there a relationship, and if there is, can causality be determined? The Social Mobility Commission is inviting proposals to undertake a study into the links between mental health and social mobility. This research forms part of the Social Mobility Commission's role to produce relevant research that provides new data and insights on social mobility in the UK. There are a range of factors that can influence a person's chances of suffering from mental illness, and mental illness itself is a label that encompasses a broad range of illnesses. The research will investigate the potential impact these might have on the likelihood of a person being socially mobile. The research should consider whether being socially mobile, either upwards or downwards, can impact on a person's mental health, either positively or negatively. This work compliments a similar project for which we are inviting proposals regarding social mobility and poor physical health.
