## Summary

The Defra Network eTendering Portal has awarded a contract to Charles River Laboratories Ltd for the generation of homozygous transgenic mice from hemizygous cryopreserved embryos. The contract falls under the industry category of laboratory services and has a total value of £54,764 GBP. The procurement method used was a direct procurement through a single tender action with a contract period starting on October 1, 2022, and ending on July 31, 2025.

This tender from APHA presents an opportunity for businesses in the services sector, particularly those involved in laboratory services. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) may find this tender especially suitable for their participation. The contract involves the production of a lineage of mice homozygous for a transgene related to prion diseases, offering a niche market opportunity for businesses with expertise in genetic modification and laboratory animal services.

## Notice

APHA require the production of a lineage of mice (mus musculus) which are homozygous for a bank-vole (Myodes glareolus) prion transgene. Prions cause transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) such as mad cow disease in cattle which is associated with variant CJD in humans. Animal TSEs are fatal and can be zoonotic i.e. can transmit from animals to human. Rodents are used for characterising these diseases and defining their zoonotic potential. Additional information: Please note that Defra procurement uses an E-tendering system for Procurement activities. This is currently provided by Bravo Solutions.
