## Summary

The Ministry of Defence has awarded a contract for the procurement of 1,620 AIW systems, with potential to acquire up to 10,000 systems over the next decade, valued at approximately £90 million. The contract covers the delivery of the systems to the Army Special Operations Brigade. The procurement method used was a restricted procedure, with the tender period ending on 18th July 2023. The contract period spans from 19th July 2023 to 31st December 2033.

This tender presents opportunities for businesses in the goods category, particularly those specialising in rifles, to engage in supplying AIW systems. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) may find this tender particularly suitable for their capabilities. The Ministry of Defence, acting as the buyer, initiated this tender process, creating a possibility for business growth for qualified suppliers such as Ian Edgar (Liverpool) Limited, the successful awardee of the contract.

## Notice

An initial circa PS15 million order of 1,620 AIW systems has been placed, with options to procure up to 10,000 systems - totalling circa PS90 million - under the contract over the next decade. The systems will initially be fielded to the Army Special Operations Brigade (ASOB) who operate in complex, high threat environments. The Alternative Individual Weapon (AIW) system - known as the L403A1 and procured by Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) under Project HUNTER - is made up of a new assault rifle fitted with a muzzle signature reduction system and an improved optical sighting system. The AIW is a modern rifle using the latest in design technology and manufacturing methods, to produce an exceptionally reliable and accurate weapon. The magnified optic means the user is able to engage threats from greater distances; whilst the signature reduction system works to mask the AIW from detection from sight and hearing.
