This range of information is vital for understanding the novel synthetic routes under development, and will also give insights into the kinetic vs thermodynamic processes which govern synthesis of functional materials. This covers a huge variety of timely research, in the case for functional oxides, including Li-ion and Na-ion battery materials, thermoelectrics, piezoelectrics, and future materials for fusion. Functional oxides are of perennial interest and are currently an area for growth with e.g. the EPSRC.
