## Summary

The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority is conducting an open procurement process titled "Measurement of melting point and density of fluoride salt mixtures", aimed at providing insights into the properties of salt mixtures essential for future fusion reactors. This tender falls within the chemical elements industry category (CPV Code: 24311000) and is based in Abingdon, England. The procurement is currently in the tender stage, with a submission deadline of 15 July 2021, and the project is expected to commence on 2 August 2021, running until 31 August 2022. The value of the contract ranges from £50,000 to £100,000, reflecting a solid opportunity for vendors in this space.

This tender represents a significant opportunity for businesses specialising in analytical and testing services related to chemical properties, particularly those with experience in handling molten salts and conducting precise thermal measurements. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are encouraged to participate, given the inclusive nature of the procurement, which seeks high-quality services to ensure accurate measurement of these critical properties. Companies that are well-suited for this contract include those running laboratories for physical measurements and developing instruments for analysing thermophysical characteristics.

## Notice

There are several possible candidate classes of coolants for future fusion reactors, including molten salts, liquid metals, gases, and supercritical fluids. Some liquid coolants have advantageous thermophysical properties over other types of coolant. In particular, molten salts demonstrate good heat transfer, allow low pressure operation, and do not suffer from disadvantageous MHD effects as liquid metals do. To determine the feasibility of fluoride molten salts for this application, it is necessary to accurately determine the properties of salt mixtures at and around the melting point. The purpose of this project is to accurately determine the density and melting point of a range of fluoride salt mixtures. Compositions of five fluoride salts will be provided, and the melting point and density should be investigated. Specifically, the melting point of each composition and the density as a function of temperature around the melting point should be accurately determined. These measurements should be repeated for five variations of each base composition, including the base composition itself. A high purity should be maintained throughout the production and testing of the salts, to ensure accurate measurements are recorded.
