## Summary

The Department for Education is currently in the tender stage for the contract titled "Downward mobility: understanding the glass floor." This project falls under the category of social work and related services, aiming to research downward mobility within Great Britain. The procurement process is open, with a tender period concluding on 3rd May 2019. The contract is expected to start on 3rd June 2019 and will last until 31st March 2020. The estimated value of the contract ranges between £100,000 and £150,000, with delivery addresses spanning the UK and British Overseas Territories.

This tender presents an opportunity for businesses, particularly those in research, social sciences, and consultancy sectors, to contribute valuable insights into social mobility issues. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and voluntary, community, and social enterprises (VCSEs) are encouraged to apply, as their unique perspectives may significantly enrich the study. Engaging in this project could not only enhance a business’s reputation in social research but also foster connections with government agencies focused on social issues.

## Notice

See Attachments for full description. The Social Mobility Commission is inviting proposals for research to better understand the incidence of downward mobility in Great Britain. This will seek to build upon previous work on downward mobility in Great Britain, particularly around the 2015 report by the Social Mobility Commission, "Downward mobility, opportunity hoarding and the 'glass floor'", and work on downward mobility by Sam Friedman, a Social Mobility Commission commissioner. It will look at understanding our society's 'fear of falling' and what occupations those from higher socio-economic backgrounds do when they 'fall down' the ladder. This research forms part of the Social Mobility Commission's role to produce relevant research that provides new data and insights on social mobility in the UK.
