## Summary

The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority has awarded the contract for the ExCALIBUR Fusion Modelling System FM-WP2 Plasma multiphysics model. The tender, part of the software package and information systems category, had a value of £378,000 and an open procurement method. The contract period is from June 18, 2022, to February 29, 2024. The procurement stage was an award, with the tender period ending on June 17, 2022.

This procurement opportunity, initiated by the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority, provides a chance for businesses in software development, experimental development services, and research and development to compete. The contract, suited for SMEs, aims to redesign simulation codes for future supercomputers. Businesses located in various regions, including the UK and Europe, can participate in this opportunity to contribute to the UK's scientific advancements and technological innovation.

## Notice

Radical changes to supercomputer architectures are on the horizon. The current simulation codes, that much of UK science relies upon, are designed for current supercomputer architectures. These codes will, at best, not be able to fully exploit the power that the supercomputers of the mid-2020s will deliver; at worst, they will run slower on those machines than they do now. Future computers will be more energy efficient and so the longer we rely upon the current approach, the more expensive the solution will be. Therefore, it is essential that we invest now in redesigning those simulation codes so that they perform well on the future generations of supercomputers.
