## Summary

The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) has initiated a project titled "STEP WP9 Task 1 - Waste Disposal and Decommissioning Optioneering" aimed at exploring the processing, disposal, and recycling solutions for waste materials generated during nuclear operations. This tender falls under the engineering services category and was active until 11 July 2019, with the award of a contract valued at £75,000 made on 1 August 2019. The procurement method used was an open procedure, with the contract beginning on 12 July 2019 and set to conclude on 31 March 2020.

This procurement offers significant opportunities for businesses specialising in engineering consultancy, waste management, and nuclear services. Companies that focus on research and development, engineering studies, and hazardous waste services could benefit particularly, as the project is designed to inform future STEP research and development, potentially leading to relaxed constraints in the design of fusion devices. With ongoing developments in the nuclear sector, suppliers in these fields should consider engaging with UKAEA to leverage potential collaborative opportunities.

## Notice

UKAEA wishes to initiate a contract to explore the processing, disposal and recycling solutions for waste materials that are likely to be generated during the nuclear operation of a STEP device. This will build upon the research-based waste assessment studies already performed by UKAEA as part of EUROfusion demonstration fusion power plant ('DEMO') studies but with a more engineering and technological focus. The project is aimed at guiding future STEP R&D, for example to indicate if the current "low-activation" constraints can be relaxed or if further mitigation steps are required in the design of STEP. The decommissioning plans for STEP should become part of the design phase and this contract will aim to deliver a prototype plan for a fusion device.
