## Summary

The Marine Management Organisation (MMO) has awarded a contract titled "Assessing Options for Non-lethal Seal Deterrents," focusing on marine research services. The procurement process, which was conducted through an open procedure, is currently at the Award stage, having been finalized on 19th February 2018. The contract, valued at £120,966, commenced on the same date and will run until 8th July 2019. Interested parties should note that the delivery addresses can include locations within various territories such as the British Overseas Territories, Channel Islands, and throughout the United Kingdom.

This tender presents significant opportunities for businesses, particularly those specialising in marine research, environmental conservation, and sustainable fishing practices. SMEs and voluntary, community, and social enterprises (VCSEs) are particularly well-suited to compete, as the project seeks innovative solutions to reduce seal depredation in fisheries. With the focus on non-lethal deterrent methods, businesses that develop such technologies or conduct marine studies could find valuable opportunities for growth and collaboration within this initiative.

## Notice

To improve specificity of advice given by the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) in its work to conserve protected species, enable sustainable marine fishing activity and reduce conflict, the MMO seeks better understanding of non-lethal deterrents suitable for control of seals from fishing vessels. This project will improve understanding of seal depredation (seals eating the catch from the fishing gear) including what assists and influences the behaviour and how substantial the impacts on English fisheries. The project will: - Review what non-lethal measures, gear modifications or fishing tactics are currently available to reduce seal depredation and bycatch for static net fisheries at sea. - Clarify what impacts may result to the fishing industry, managers and seals of using such non-lethal deterrents. - Field test the most promising deterrent approaches.
