## Summary

Highways England, based in Birmingham, has recently awarded a contract titled "T0261 Management of Fatigue in Steel Bridges," which falls within the research and development services category. This contract, valued at approximately £180,008.80, aims to establish a risk-based approach for managing fatigue in steel bridges maintained by the organisation. The contract commenced on 1st April 2022 and will run until 31st March 2023. The procurement method used was selective, involving a call-off from a framework agreement, with the award status currently active.

This tender presents a significant opportunity for businesses, particularly those in the consultancy field with expertise in structural engineering and bridge maintenance. Companies that specialise in research and development services related to civil engineering, as well as those that focus on risk management and fatigue analysis, would be well-suited to engage in similar future opportunities. The inclusion of the voluntary and community sector in supplier eligibility indicates a growing recognition of diverse capabilities, allowing SMEs to participate in impactful projects.

## Notice

National Highways is responsible for the maintenance and operation of 1475 bridges constructed with a steel primary deck element. A large percentage of these structures were designed before the publication of the design code for fatigue BS 5400 part 10 and therefore may contain components with a fatigue life less than the design life of the structure. The objective of the client is to produce a standard which takes a risk based approach to the management of fatigue in steel bridges. This will have the aim of proactively managing bridges at risk of developing fatigue, rather that reactive.
