The councils currently have a wide variety of mechanisms to dispose of waste, but none owns or has a long-term relationship to allow for optimised arrangements. The councils are also due to be replaced by two new unitary councils (North Northamptonshire Council and West Northamptonshire Council) on 1st April 2020. However, whilst this offers some opportunities for service and infrastructure rationalisation, the underlying service and financial issues remain. The councils would therefore like to commission work to consider the optimal arrangement for waste infrastructure in Northamptonshire.
