## Summary

The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs is currently conducting a tender for the project titled "Specific environmental risks from repurposing oil and gas wells". This initiative falls under the research services category and is based in the United Kingdom. The procurement stage is at the Tender phase, with submissions due by 13:00 on 29th October 2021. The project's budget is set at £20,000, and it aims to explore the environmental implications of repurposing hydrocarbon wells for alternative energy applications. The contract period will commence on 16th November 2021 and last until 31st March 2022.

This tender presents an opportunity for businesses specialising in environmental research and consultancy services, particularly those experienced in assessing the impact of energy resource management. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are particularly encouraged to participate. Companies that offer expertise in hydrology, geothermal energy, and environmental risk assessment would be well-positioned to compete for this project, as it requires analytical skills to investigate potential contamination pathways and the viability of repurposing existing wells for non-hydrocarbon uses.

## Notice

Hydrocarbon wells that have not yet been fully decommissioned can be repurposed and used for the extraction of geothermal energy, storage of hydrogen, thermal or mechanical energy, or CO2. However, it is not yet clear what the potential environmental impacts might be from using these wells for purposes for which they weren't originally intended. For this we need to build on our existing knowledge about the source-pathways-receptors of pollution from oil and gas wells and other technologies in order to understand the specific environmental risks from different fluids and operating regimes associated with repurposed wells. This project will 1. Explain how onshore oil and gas wells can be repurposed to extract or store non-hydrocarbon fluids in the subsurface. 2. Summarise requirements for repurposing wells for different technologies (i.e. geothermal, hydrogen and CO2). 3. Detail the potential sources and pathways of contamination to groundwater that could result from repurposing wells. 4. Provide an indication as to how many onshore hydrocarbon wells could feasibly and safely be repurposed for different applications. Additional information: To apply please respond to the attached Invitation to Quote and associated documents. Email your response and/or questions to sian.loveless@environment-agency.gov.uk. Tenders to be received no later than 13:00 on 29nd October 2021.
