## Summary

The University of Southampton is currently conducting an open tender for the acquisition of a Gamma Spectrometry Compton Suppression System, a highly specialised piece of equipment intended to enhance nuclear research capabilities. The tender, which falls under the goods procurement category, is located in Southampton, UK. The tender period will close on 26 January 2021, with the contract expected to begin on 31 March 2021 and end on 30 March 2022. Interested suppliers must register on the electronic tendering platform In-Tend to access the necessary documents and submit their proposals.

This tender presents significant opportunities for businesses involved in the production or supply of scientific equipment, particularly those focusing on spectrometers and radiation measurement technology. Companies with expertise in providing advanced research facilities or equipment suited for nuclear characterisation and remediation technologies will be particularly well-suited to compete. Engaging with this procurement can open avenues for growth, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises looking to participate in high-value contracts facilitated by university research initiatives.

## Notice

A gamma spectrometry Compton suppression system comprising of an ultra-lowbackground shield coupled with a cosmic veto system would reduce the inherent background of natural and cosmic gamma radiation enabling ultra-precise measurements of trace gamma radiation within any given sample. This highly specialist equipment (mostly found at military or government facilities) will significantly extend the University of Southampton's capability to deliver UK and internationally-leading fundamental and applied research into nuclear characterisation and remediation technologies, building on capability provided by the EPSRC-funded national NNUF-EXACT facility. The commissioning of this system will facilitate characterisation of low-abundant gamma-emitting radionuclides, supporting multiple core research areas in nuclear decommissioning, waste characterisation technology development, environmental testing, and remediation technology evaluation. Based on both the high-quality research / publications and enhanced enterprise activities that would be enabled by the purchase of a gamma spectrometry Compton suppression system, a grant has been awarded by EPSRC under the unmet equipment needs framework.
