## Summary

Lancaster University is seeking to procure 3rd Party Programmable Optics through an open tender process classified under computer network services. The procurement is intended to facilitate a significant upgrade in network connectivity across the University campus located in Lancaster, UK. The tender was published on 4th May 2017, and the submission deadline for bids is 5th June 2017. The total estimated value of the contract is £300,000, and it encompasses both the initial purchase as well as potential future needs, aligning with the University's long-term strategy. The contract is scheduled to commence on 3rd July 2017 and run until 2nd July 2020.

This tender presents substantial opportunities for businesses specialising in communication technology and network infrastructure, particularly those experienced in the supply of advanced optical components. Companies with the capability to deliver high-quality, fibre optic solutions and who can adapt to evolving technological requirements will be well-positioned to compete. As Lancaster University plans to implement a dual fibre link system across approximately 650 edge switches, firms that can provide innovative and reliable products will enhance their chances of securing a contract in this competitive procurement process.

## Notice

Lancaster University has approximately 1,000 edge switches distributed around the University Campus at Bailrigg, Lancaster. These are mostly connected to pairs of distribution switches on 1GE copper (RJ45). A forthcoming move to higher speeds will change how we will be providing connectivity to edge switches; rather than pairs of local distribution switches the distribution switches will be remote from edge switches. We are a fibre rich site and therefore intend to dual connect every edge switch to resilient distribution switches over single mode fibre. The edge switches are currently a mix of 1GE and 10GE SFP/SFP+ uplinks. The initial purchase of the 3rd party programmable optics is for a specific new building. This allows Lancaster University to trial a new network design before rolling out dual fibre links to around 650 edge switches over the next 2 years. This procurement covers both the initial purchase (known as Phase 1) and all future requirements, subject to the agreed wider University strategy and satisfactory performance from the successful supplier.
