## Summary

The procurement process conducted by Kent County Council involves contracts for the provision of mortuary services, crucial for fulfilling obligations under the Coroners and Justice Act 2009. The procurement stage is currently in the award phase, and the title of the tender is "Contracts for the Provision of Mortuary Services." This service falls under the industry category of post-mortem and mortuary equipment and supplies, with the OCP classification ID 33900000. The services are to be delivered across the South East of the United Kingdom. The contract period began on 1st April 2024 and is set to conclude on 31st March 2029, with a total contract value of £7,000,000 GBP. The procurement method employed was a direct award under Regulation 12 of the Public Contract Regulations 2015, which enables cooperation between contracting authorities without the need for competitive tendering.

This tender represents a significant opportunity for businesses in the healthcare and mortuary services industry, particularly those working with or aiming to partner with NHS Trusts. Given the procurement approach—establishing cooperation between public entities such as NHS Trusts—it suits large-scale organisations accustomed to fulfilling comprehensive service contracts over extended periods. While this specific tender may not directly involve small and medium enterprises or voluntary, community, and social enterprises, large organisations with experience in providing specialised mortuary services and equipment will find it a substantial opportunity to support public health requirements within the UK, fostering long-term partnerships with NHS Trusts in the region.

## Notice

The Coroners and Justice Act 2009 places a duty on Coroners to investigate deaths that are referred to them if they have reason to think that: The death was violent or unnatural; The cause of death is unknown; or The deceased died while in prison, police custody or another form of state detention. In some cases, the Coroner will order a Post-Mortem (PM) to establish the cause of death, and in such cases, the deceased is taken to one of five NHS mortuaries across Kent and Medway. On behalf of the Kent Senior Coroners, KCC ensures access to body storage and PM facilities across the Kent coroner areas. Contracts with Dartford and Gravesham, East Kent, Medway Maritime and Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trusts for the provision of PM facilities are in place to fulful this requirement.
