## Summary

The NHS Sheffield CCG is currently conducting a tender for the "Community Carpel Tunnel Service (AQP)" aimed at ensuring that patients in Doncaster can safely manage their self-medication needs at home. This procurement, classified under the CPV code for "Sharps containers," has a total contract value of £240,000 and follows an open procurement procedure due to its classification as above threshold. The tender period ends on 16 November 2020, and the service contract will commence on 1 April 2021, lasting until 31 March 2023. The delivery addresses for this service will be in the Yorkshire and the Humber region, specifically around the postal code DN4 5HZ.

This tender offers significant opportunities for businesses involved in medical waste management and related services, specifically those that can efficiently handle the collection, transport, and disposal of hospital waste. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and voluntary, community, and social enterprises (VCSEs) are particularly suited to compete, especially those with expertise in managing sharps waste in compliance with health regulations. Winning this contract could bolster their reputation and create stable service opportunities within the healthcare sector.

## Notice

An increasing number of patients, such as diabetics or those who are required to inject blood thinners during the post-operative period, are able to self-medicate without the need for a healthcare practitioner to administer injections. Primary and Secondary care providers; NHS Doncaster Clinical Commissioning Group; and Doncaster Council each have statutory duties to ensure the health, safety and well-being of Doncaster residents and self-medicating patients by enabling these individuals to safely manage their condition(s) at home. Patients who self-inject must: - Be trained in the correct assembly of sharps bins; - Know how to use the temporary closure of sharps bins (for safety whilst in use); - Know how to lock the sharps bin once full (for safety prior to collection); - Know how to access new needles and medication when needed; - Know the timetable for the collection and delivery of their sharps bin which is usually on a quarterly basis but patients requiring a temporary, one-off, or alternative collection frequency will need to know who to contact to make a change / service request; - Know how to arrange for a new sharps bin to be delivered; and - Have their waste collected safely and efficiently in a timely fashion as detailed in their collection schedule. The service provider is required to provide timely and cost effective sharps bin delivery, collection and disposal services from nominated customer's homes in full compliance with all applicable waste transport and waste disposal legislation.
