## Summary

The University of Birmingham invites tenders for the supply and installation of a reconfigurable laser micro processing workstation as part of an ESIF project aimed at supporting SMEs in the West Midlands. This procurement is currently in the Tender stage, with a deadline for submissions set for 19th January 2018. Interested parties should note that the contract period is expected to commence on 10th February 2018 and conclude on 29th March 2018. The competitive procurement method is classified as an open procedure and falls under the category of goods, specifically machine tools operated by laser and machining centres.

This tender presents a significant opportunity for businesses in the equipment and tooling sector, particularly those specialising in advanced manufacturing technologies and laser systems. Companies that can demonstrate expertise in delivering high precision and highly customizable solutions may find themselves well-suited to compete for this contract. Additionally, partnerships with the technology provider will be essential, as the University seeks to facilitate R&D projects that align with the specific needs of local SMEs, further promoting growth and collaboration within the region.

## Notice

Supply and Installation Of A SmartFub Laser Micro Processing Workstation - ESIF Project The University of Birmingham invites tenders for supply of a reconfigurable laser micro processing workstation. The workstation will be used to facilitate/support the take-up of high impact laser micro processing technologies by the SMEs in West Midlands. In particular, it will be used to develop new applications with the technology provider and carry out feasibility studies and pilot projects to address the specific requirements of local SMEs. Therefore, it will be required as part of the project to build strong partnerships with the technology provider and define a joint co-funded R&D programme for the benefits of local businesses. General characteristics A workstation that can be reconfigured to realise a range of laser processing operations with high accuracy and repeatability, i.e. laser engraving/structuring, surface patterning and texturing, drilling and cutting, on complex/3D metal, ceramic and polymer substrates/parts. Specification 1) High stability class 1 workstation with granite table conforming to the requirements of latest machinery and laser health and safety standards (EN 13849-1, EN 60947-5-3:1999, EN 1088:1995+A2:2008, BS EN 13849, BS EN 1088, BS EN 60825: 2014) 2) High frequency NIR sub-pico laser (less than 500 fs) source with pulse energy of at least 40uJ and 10uJ @ 0.5 and 2 MHz, respectively, and pulse frequencies selectable in the range from 1 to 2000 kHz. 3) High dynamics scan head for micro patterning/structuring. In particular the scan head should meet the following requirements: the maximum scanning speed should not be less than 5m/s with a 100mm focusing lens; the tracking error of the scan head should not be bigger than 120us while the thermal drift should not be bigger than 30 urad; the frequency of the communication protocol should be sufficiently high to allow scribing of short lines at high speeds (i.e. delay settings with a precision of ?1us which corresponds to 2um at 2m/s). 4) Modular and dust protected beam line with sufficient flexibility/reconfigurability to integrate additional optics, e.g. focal ?-shaper (500mm required after a beam expander) and/or diffractive optics (100mm before optional z-module). 5) Beam management functionalities (safety shutter, laser beam diameter expansion factor, polarization and power) monitored and easily controlled through the laser system software. 6) Environmental control (Air-conditioning) of the machine enclosure to avoid temperature variations more than ?2 degrees Celsius over period of 12 hours (without opening the machine door). 7) Exchangeable f-theta telecentric lenses and a workstation configuration that can accommodate lenses with focal distances of 80, 100 and 160 mm and a micro drilling/cutting head. 8) Multi-axis processing with two rotary stages, e.g. to realize different processing operations on axisymmetric and free-form...
