## Summary

The General Medical Council (GMC) is conducting an open tender for research consultancy services titled "Research into what it means to be a doctor." This project aims to gain insights into doctors' professional experiences and perceptions that influence their practice and career development. The procurement is currently in the tender stage, with submissions due by 4th May 2017. The contract is expected to commence on 23rd May 2017 and conclude on 16th October 2017. This opportunity is relevant to businesses within the research and consultancy industry, specifically those specialising in market and economic research, social research services, and overall research services.

Companies that can demonstrate experience in conducting studies on professional practices, service evaluations, or working with the healthcare sector are well-positioned to compete. With a budget of up to £75,000 (inclusive of VAT), businesses can leverage their skills to deliver compelling insights that inform the medical profession's future, making this an attractive tender for capable research firms.

## Notice

Aim and objectives In considering these hypotheses, we have developed the following aim and objectives: To gain an in-depth understanding of the professional experiences and perceptions of doctors that impact on the ways they practice and develop their careers. This aim is underpinned by the following objectives: i To explore what 'professionalism' means for doctors. ii To track whether doctors' perceptions of professionalism change over time at an individual level, and if so what factors impact on these changes. iii To identify whether there are any generational differences in defining and practising professionalism through analysing individuals' experiences and perceptions. iv To examine the relationship between working hours and perceived professionalism by examining how working patterns differ. v To investigate what factors contribute to doctors deciding to leave the profession, take a career break and/or practice in the UK, with analysis being undertaken by cohort. vi To explore how perspectives and experiences about professionalism reported by doctors practising in the UK compare with those practising internationally. It is essential that in exploring these objectives that the study is focused on the exploration of individual doctors' professional experiences, rather than looking at perceived differences of other practitioners, by generation, seniority, specialism and so on. These objectives will be achieved through answering the following questio...sks in the project and how they might be addressed. - Provide details of how you will quality assure your research procedures and outputs. - Detail how the project will be managed and how you will establish communication protocols with the GMC. - Provide a comprehensive breakdown of costs for all aspects of the work including management and presentation costs (including VAT where appropriate). - Explain why your organisation is well placed to design and implement this activity, including your expertise in undertaking similar studies in engaging with a wide range of bodies and individuals to explore professionals' perceptions and experiences. - Throughout the project we expect to play an active role in monitoring and evaluating progress and your proposal should state how you will undertake this. Following award of the contract and further discussion between us and the successful supplier(s), we will require a fully refined and costed plan that makes best use of the funding available and sets out the activity to be delivered, project milestones, and mechanisms for reporting on the project. We will require regular weekly status reports that give details of the activity carried out and identify any risks or other issues. 58. Duration The contract will run from the date of the award of the contract to the project final report deadline of 16th October 2017. 59. Price We have set a budget for this work, and that is up to a value of GBP75,000 (inclusive of VAT).
