## Summary

The procurement process involves a contract awarded by the Defra Network eTendering Portal for a project titled "Model transferability for improved preparedness against emerging tree diseases." This project falls under the industry category of research and development services, specifically focusing on the evaluation of tree disease modelling approaches. The contract, valued at £70,000, is set to commence on 7th May 2019 and will run until 6th November 2022. The procurement method utilised was a collaboration agreement, and the procurement stage at this point is complete, having concluded on 10th July 2018.

This tender presents a significant opportunity for businesses engaged in research services and consultancy within the environmental sector, particularly those focusing on plant health and disease management. Companies with expertise in modelling and analytics, as well as those able to contribute to the development of transferable models for policymaking in the face of tree disease threats, would be well-positioned to compete for similar contracts in the future. The involvement of academic institutions, like the University of Salford, highlights the potential for partnerships between businesses and educational organisations in this field.

## Notice

Recent emerging tree diseases such Ash dieback in the UK (Hymenoscyphus fraxineus) have caused significant environmental and economic damage. Devastating new diseases, such as Xylella in Europe, are a constant threat. Models developed to inform policy about how best to address these threats are largely bespoke and the general characteristics of models which facilitate transferability have not been fully explored. This PhD will use a range of modelling approaches to compare how predictions from models parameterised at one location perform in new locations, as well as across different disease species. Multiple model-performance criteria will be defined to test the impact of model transferability on the accuracy to estimate the outcome of different intervention strategies allowing for a quantification of the extent that transferability is possible in a way that is of direct relevance to DEFRA.
