## Summary

The University of Exeter has completed a procurement process for an Ellipsometer, which falls under the category of laboratory and optical equipment. This contract was initiated under an open tender procedure, with the procurement process marking its completion on 27th September 2018. The contract was awarded to Quantum Design UK & Ireland Ltd, with a total value of £78,000. The contract duration is set from 13th July 2018 to 12th July 2019, and the goods are to be delivered to the South West region of the United Kingdom within the specified contract period.

This procurement offers significant opportunities for businesses specialising in optical and precision equipment, especially those that provide related support services like maintenance and training. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and voluntary, community, and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations are particularly encouraged to participate in such tenders, as the scope often aligns with the capacities of these businesses. Companies equipped to produce or supply advanced laboratory equipment could find this an advantageous avenue for growth in the competitive procurement landscape.

## Notice

This ERC-funded project led by Prof. Bill Barnes concerns the interaction of light with nanostructured materials. A key part of the project is to measure the optical properties of a range of materials, primarily in the form of thin films on glass or semiconducting substrates. Substrates will typically be 1 mm thick, and approx. 10 - 25 mm square, although other sizes may be used. Film thicknesses will be typically in the range 5 nm - 5 microns. The films to be investigated range from reflective metals such as gold and silver, through dye-doped polymers, to graphene-like materials. In order to undertake this piece of research the University is procuring an Ellipsometer with supporting maintenance and training.
