## Summary

The UK Cereal Pathogen Virulence Survey tender, initiated by the Defra Network eTendering Portal, aims to monitor virulence changes in cereal pathogens to safeguard crop production. This procurement falls under the agricultural services category and is located in Kenilworth, England. The contract, valued at approximately £600,000, is currently in the award stage, with the award decision published on 5th June 2019. The contract period is set to run from 1st April 2019 until 31st March 2022, following an open procurement method with a tender deadline that originally ended on 1st August 2018.

This tender presents significant opportunities for businesses involved in agricultural research and pathology, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that focus on plant health and crop science. Organisations with expertise in monitoring plant diseases, developing resistant wheat varieties, or providing agronomic services would be well-positioned to compete. By engaging in this contract, businesses can contribute to vital research that benefits the cereal industry while expanding their market presence and developing partnerships with large suppliers like the John Innes Centre and NIAB.

## Notice

The UK Cereal Pathogen Virulence Survey (UKCPVS) was set up in 1967 in response to an unexpected epidemic of yellow rust in the popular and previously resistant wheat variety Rothwell Perdix. This epidemic was as a result of the sudden emergence of a new race of yellow rust with virulence for this variety. The formation of the UKCPVS was in recognition of the urgent need to detect new pathogen races at an early stage, before widespread epidemics can establish. Early detection of changes in pathogen virulence remains the central aim of the UKCPVS. AHDB Cereals and Oilseeds, APHA, and in-kind contributions from plant breeding and agronomy companies are currently funding the work and are looking for a contractor to continue and develop current research over the next 3 years. The main purpose of this research is to monitor changes in the virulence of certain major cereal foliar pathogens and determine their significance for the resistances that are being used in current varieties and breeding programmes. This will provide essential information for cereal variety testing programmes funded by AHDB Cereals and Oilseeds, as well as for the industry as a whole.
