## Summary

The UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) recently concluded a procurement process for the deployment of a Science DMZ - Data Transfer Nodes, aimed at enhancing data transmission rates between UKAEA sites and global high-performance computing systems. This falls under the industry category of data transmission services and is key to supporting the development of commercial fusion power. The procurement, which used a selective procedure through a restricted process, involved acquiring up to four Data Transfer Nodes. With a total contract value of £71,000 GBP, the contract was awarded to CDW Limited on 26th September 2025, following the tender period that ended on 4th September 2025. The procurement stage is complete with the contract period running from 2nd October 2025 to 1st October 2028. The operations span across locations including the United Kingdom, British Overseas Territories, and several other regions globally.

This tender offers significant growth opportunities for businesses specialising in high-speed data transmission solutions or those looking to expand into the fusion power sector. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) with expertise in developing data transfer infrastructures could particularly benefit from participating in similar tenders. The requirement for equipment capable of saturating 100GbE network links per node suggests opportunities for companies providing cutting-edge data transmission technologies. Engaging in these projects not only opens avenues for technological innovation but also provides a platform to engage with significant government-backed initiatives focussing on creating a low carbon future.

## Notice

UKAEA are seeking to deploy a science DMZ (https://fasterdata.es.net/science-dmz/) to allow high data rates between UKAEA sites and to and from global HPC systems. This will involve the daily transfer of hundreds of Terabytes of data in support of our mission to support the development of commercial fusion power for a low carbon future. UKAEA already has provision through JISC for a burst speed of up to 200Gbps. To ensure we have the necessary hardware to be able to transmit data at a sufficient rate, we are looking to purchase up to 4 Data Transfer Nodes (DTNs) capable of saturating 100GbE network links per node.
