## Summary

The Department of Transport has successfully awarded a contract for "Heimdall Roadcast: Road Traffic Observation and Forecasting," focusing on research and development consultancy services within the UK. This project, which commenced on 9th January 2019 and is scheduled to conclude by 3rd April 2019, explores innovative machine learning techniques to enhance traffic forecasting by automating the collection of contextual data. This procurement was initiated as a single tender action, with a budget of £49,998, and the tender period ended on 5th December 2018.

This opportunity is ideal for businesses involved in research and development, particularly those specialising in machine learning, data analytics, or traffic management solutions. Companies that can provide innovative methods for automating data collection and those with a strong background in traffic forecasting would be well-positioned to benefit from similar future tenders. Engaging with such initiatives can facilitate business growth by tapping into new technology trends and supporting public sector objectives in traffic management.

## Notice

An alternative method of forecasting traffic conditions explored in a PHD research project with Southampton University, sponsored by Siemens. Could Congestion be predicted using a machine learning approach that fused data from traffic detectors and selected contextual sources? This research programme developed a machine learning algorithm called Roadcast which has been found to be more accurate that historical average predictors by being able to learn the effects of different contexts (events, roadwork's etc.) on traffic behaviour. The contextual data sources used in the Roadcast research project were collected manually, so an important step towards commercial upscaling is the automation contextual data collection. The feasibility project will propose a method for automatically delivering contextual data for use in improving traffic condition forecasting.
