## Summary

The University of Surrey has awarded a contract for the project titled "C26683 Studentship Agreement: Understanding the risk & preparing for arboviruses TMUV & WSLV". This research contract, which falls under the industry category of "Design and execution of research and development", aims to study the competence of UK and invasive mosquito species in transmitting the Tembusu (TMUV) and Wesselsbron (WSLV) viruses. The contract was awarded on 8th November 2024, and the research will commence on 8th January 2024, concluding on 31st March 2027. The project will be conducted in the South East region of England, with specific postal code delivery at GU2 7XH. The total contract value is GBP 45,436, with the procurement method being a single tender action below the threshold, indicating a direct procurement approach.

This tender provides ample opportunities for businesses involved in research and development, specifically those with expertise in studying zoonotic diseases and vector competence. Firms in the academic and specialised research sectors can significantly benefit from engaging in this project. The exclusive direct procurement method suggests that businesses with existing relationships or notable expertise in the field of arboviruses may find it easier to compete. Although not specifically geared toward small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) or voluntary community and social enterprises (VCSEs), the project still presents a substantial opportunity for specialised research institutions to acquire valuable insights and contribute to significant advancements in public health research.

## Notice

Arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) are the cause of some of the greatest burdens to human and animal health worldwide. Two of these viruses Tembusu (TMUV) and Wesselsbron (WSLV) viruses cause serious diseases to livestock, they are zoonotic, and they have similar transmission cycles to West Nile Virus. The PhD will assess the following hypothesis "Are UK and invasive mosquitos' species competent vectors for TMUV and WSLV re-emerging viruses?".
