## Summary

The University of Exeter has awarded a contract for the purchase of a Fusion Bead Machine under the UK Shared Prosperity Fund project's 'Technology Metals Technical Capability Expansion - Phase 1: Minerals Processing'. This initiative aims to bolster the technical capabilities of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, and expedite research, development, and innovation in the geo-resources sector. The procurement process used an open procedure, and the contract was signed on 26th September 2024, with completion expected by 27th November 2026. The project, co-delivered by the Camborne School of Mines and Grinding Solutions Ltd, addresses a strategic opportunity to enhance the region's endowment in critical technology metals.

This procurement opens significant opportunities for businesses involved in the supply and maintenance of scientific and mining equipment, particularly those specialising in fusion equipment, research laboratory services, and technical apparatus. Small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) focusing on innovative mineral processing solutions may find this tender particularly beneficial. Given the nature of the project, companies that provide robust service contracts and warranties for high-tech machines are well-suited to compete. This award, valued at approximately £78,592.80, was granted to Cole-Parmer Instrument Company Limited, highlighting the importance of reliable and advanced technological solutions in the critical minerals sector.

## Notice

The University of Exeter (UoE) has a requirement to purchase a Fusion Bead Machine as part of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund project 'Technology Metals Technical Capability Expansion - Phase 1: Minerals Processing'. This project will provide an important component of a nationally unique Critical Minerals Equipment Hub to expand Cornwall and Isles of Scilly (CIoS) technical capability, lower analytical costs and time delays, raise through-put and accelerate RD&I across the geo-resources sector. It addresses the unique opportunity resulting from the region's endowment in technology metals (including lithium, tin and tungsten) that are critical for continued UK economic growth and to decarbonise our society. The project will be co-delivered by the Camborne School of Mines (CSM), University of Exeter, the UK's only multidisciplinary mining school, and Grinding Solutions Ltd (GSL), a leading mineral processing consultancy and "central cog" in the CIoS technology metals sector. The University requires a minimum 1-year warranty on this device, commencing from the date of goods installation, with the option to extend the warranty and to include a service contract of up to 5-years (maximum 5-year contract).
