## Summary

The Gambling Commission, based in Birmingham, has completed a tender titled "Young People and Gambling Qualitative Research" under the CPV code 79315000 for social research services. The aim of this research is to gather qualitative insights from 11-17 year olds to complement the existing Young People and Gambling Survey. The contract, valued at £49,680, was awarded to 2Cv Research and involves conducting qualitative research in the West Midlands from 19 July 2024 to 31 October 2024. This procurement was carried out through a selective method, specifically a call-off from a dynamic purchasing system. The procurement stage is currently at the award stage, with the award notice published on 14 August 2024.

This tender opens up significant business growth opportunities for firms with expertise in social research, particularly those who can handle sensitive topics effectively. The project is particularly suited for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) specialising in qualitative research and public health-related studies. The findings from this research are set to play a crucial role in shaping harm-reduction measures and educational activities aimed at young people, making this an impactful project for businesses focusing on social impact and policy development.

## Notice

We currently collect data annually on 11-17 year olds via the Young People and Gambling Survey. This research enables us to collect and publish official statistics on gambling-related behaviours and experiences, and the prevalence of problem gambling, amongst 11-17 year olds in Great Britain. We are seeking competitive tenders to undertake qualitative research with 11-17 year olds to build on and contextualise the findings from the Young People and Gambling Surveys and strengthen the evidence base. This will complement our ongoing collection of core data on overall rates of gambling participation and prevalence of problem gambling among 11-17 year olds. The aim of this work is to build on and add context to the Young People and Gambling Survey findings to further develop our understanding of how young people are introduced to gambling products and activities that are new to them. We also need to better understand the impact of these activities on young people, especially where it might be associated with risky or harmful gambling, which could be extremely impactful for strengthening harm-reduction measures for young people, or for targeting educational activities. We want the research to 'tell the story' of young people's experiences of gambling and the impacts it can have. However, it is important to consider that gambling can be a sensitive topic and we want young people to be as open and honest as possible without worrying that they may get into trouble for doing something their parents don't approve of or that could potentially be illegal.
