## Summary

The procurement process for the treatment and disposal of Sellafield Ltd Cave Windows was conducted by Nuclear Waste Services, a UK-based organisation specialising in nuclear waste management. This tender involved the management of Very Low Level Waste (VLLW) and was aimed at providing a sustainable disposal solution in line with UK Government's Solid LLW Strategy. The procurement stage is complete, with the award made on 13th January 2025. The procurement method was selective, operating via a call-off from an existing framework agreement, and the contract period runs from 13th January 2025 to 26th April 2027. The contract is valued at £400,000, and the delivery location is in the North West of the UK, specifically at postcode CA20 1DB.

This tender offers significant growth opportunities for businesses experienced in radioactive waste treatment services, particularly those capable of handling Very Low Level Waste. Companies specialising in sustainable waste management solutions and compliance with government strategies will find this contract beneficial. The awarded supplier, FCC Environment, reflects the need for expert service providers in the environmental and waste management sectors. Although the suitability criteria did not favour SMEs or VCSEs, businesses with the relevant expertise and capacity in the nuclear waste treatment industry would have been well-suited to compete for this opportunity.

## Notice

Nuclear Waste Services (NWS), through its Waste Services line of business, provides a Very Low Level Waste Treatment Service to both NDA and non-NDA customers. The service was established with the primary aim of prolonging the life of the repository through diverting very low level waste away from disposal at the LLWR site to treatment providers with the capability of disposal of the very low level waste. In line with the UK Government's Solid LLW Strategy and the Waste Management Hierarchy, this provides a more sustainable solution and extends the life of the LLWR site by reducing the volume of waste requiring disposal. A Procurement exercise in 2020 was carried out to award a Framework Agreement to several suppliers to dispose of Very Low Level Waste on behalf NWS, NDA and non NDA customers. This Further Competition was carried out as a call-off under the Framework Agreement for the disposal of Very Low Level Waste. This package of work is for the treatment and disposal of up to 24 Zinc Bromide Cave Window Carcasses from Sellafield Ltd.
