## Summary

The procurement process for legal services titled "British Shipbuilders Legal Advice" is being conducted by UK Shared Business Services Limited. This tender is categorised under the legal services industry and involves significant expertise in managing complex personal injury claims related to industrial diseases. The contract, valued at £2,500,000, is currently in the award stage, with the contract period commencing on 3rd September 2020 and concluding on 2nd September 2023. The services must primarily be delivered in the North East and Scotland regions of the United Kingdom, with the tender period having ended on 30th June 2020.

This tender presents ample opportunities for legal firms, particularly those with experience in personal injury law, corporate knowledge management, and handling contentious cases related to historical claims. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and voluntary, community, and social enterprises (VCSEs) are encouraged to consider competing, given the contract's stated aim to maintain value for money and robust legal advice for ongoing and future cases, as personal injury claims are anticipated to extend until 2050.

## Notice

There is a requirement for the supplier to build up and retain a strong corporate knowledge of BS combined with legal expertise to manage complex and contentious cases. Very few BS documents remain, so a key requirement is the ability to develop an understanding of the complex corporate history of British Shipbuilders. The personal injury claims are in relation to industrial related diseases or injuries such as Mesothelioma, asbestosis, pleural plaques (in Scotland), pleural thickening, lung cancer, vibration white figure and deafness. The long latency periods for the development of asbestos related diseases means that we expect to receive personal injury claims until 2050. The claims currently amount to around PS6-7 million per year. Strategic Objective To provide a flexible and robust contract for legal advice and claims handling services which meets both the business as usual and any future litigation requirements of the Department, and provides Value for Money ("VFM") over the entire contract. It is recognised that delivering the above successfully will require the supplier to maintain a strong corporate knowledge of the former corporation and its many subsidiaries.
