## Summary

The procurement process for the "SPAG Lot 1. Inflatable Protective Clothing for Motorcyclists - Research Project" is being conducted by the Department for Transport, located in London, England. This award follows a selective procurement method that adopted a negotiated procedure, and it is currently in the Award stage. The contract, valued at £58,952.59, commenced on 3rd January 2017 and will conclude on 31st March 2017. The tender period ended on 29th November 2016, which marks the key date for submissions related to this research initiative aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of airbag technology in protecting motorcyclists.

This tender presents significant opportunities for businesses, particularly those specialising in research and development services, safety equipment manufacturing, or consultancy services related to motorcycling safety. Companies that have experience in producing innovative protective clothing or conducting safety assessments for motor vehicles would be particularly well-suited to compete for this contract, enabling them to showcase their expertise in developing solutions that could enhance road safety and potentially save lives.

## Notice

4.1 The primary objective of this research is to establish, based on current evidence, whether or not airbag technology, used as part of a motorcyclist's clothing, has the potential to prevent or reduce injuries and to save lives. 4.2 We are aware that airbag technology has been used in clothing in recent years in the equestrian and motorcycle sporting world. However, the Department's work on helmet safety (from which the SHARP - Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Programme - evolved) identified that the injury mechanisms experienced in competition conditions are not the same as those experienced on public roads and in road traffic incidents. This study into air bag technology will provide a review of injury mechanisms relating to road casualties (killed and seriously injured) for which air bag technology in clothing may have potential.
