## Summary

The NATIONAL NUCLEAR LABORATORY LIMITED has completed a tender titled "Hands Out of Gloveboxes - Human Factors Support," focused on safety consultancy services within the nuclear industry. This contract was initiated through a selective procurement method via a call-off from a framework agreement. The tender period concluded on 30 July 2019, while the contract period commenced on 12 August 2019 and extends until 31 December 2019. The delivery addresses for the project's requirements are located in the North West region of England, specifically at the buyer's premises in Warrington. The total value of the awarded contract is £27,380.

This contract offers significant opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) specialising in safety consultancy, particularly those that have experience with robotic systems in hazardous environments. Businesses that can provide innovative solutions in the field of safety and robotics will fit well within the scope of this project. Additionally, as the project seeks to develop a robotic system to limit manual intervention in nuclear processes, companies with expertise in engineering and automation technologies will be particularly well-positioned to benefit from future phases of this initiative.

## Notice

Manual glovebox activities (personnel using gloveport gloves to undertake tasks within the glovebox containment) require personnel to work in close proximity to nuclear materials whilst manipulating tools and equipment. The predominant risk associated with such work is internal dose to due injection following penetration of a glove however additional risks include extremity dose to hands and fingers. Therefore, the aspiration is to remove the need for operators to undertake manual glovebox activities. This project is being set up to understand the feasibility of such an idea. The project is set up in two phases. Phase 1 of the work, which is currently programmed until the end of November 2019, is about: * Understanding the requirements that the robotic system must perform * Reviewing the current market availability of robotic systems that may perform the requirements * Carrying out a controlled assessment of each robotic system to determine its suitability * Defining any modification work that will conducted in phase 2 to ensure that it will work within a nuclearised environment. Phase 2 will focus on delivering a robotic system that is remotely controlled and meets the requirements of the customer, this will be competed separately.
