## Summary

The procurement process involves Public Health England, which has recently awarded a contract for the purchase of an AKTA Pure 150M machine, crucial for producing antigens and other bacterial proteins for immunotherapeutics and vaccines. This procurement falls under the goods category, specifically chromatographs, and was completed following a limited procurement method, where the contract was awarded without prior publication of a contract notice. The tender process concluded on 24 July 2017, and the award was published on 20 September 2017, with a contract duration from 17 August 2017 to 31 July 2020. The delivery address includes various locations within the UK and British Overseas Territories.

This tender represents an opportunity for businesses, particularly those in the scientific equipment sector, to engage with Public Health England and similar organisations in future contracts. Companies that specialise in laboratory equipment, particularly with unique compatible systems, would be well-positioned to compete. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) may find this a suitable opportunity given the government's encouragement for such businesses to participate in public procurement.

## Notice

Public Health England required an AKTA Pure 150M to replace an aging AKTA FPLC to allow the team to produce antigens, toxins and other bacterial proteins of the required specification for production of immunotherapeutics and vaccines for use in clinical trials. The justifications behind purchasing the AKTA Pure 150M were: - The unicorn software is required in order to allow compatability with the existing machines in the lab being used for this work. It is unique to GE systems (AKTA Pure). This software will allow PHE to transfer their protein purification methods to the new unit. - The enclosed Fraction collector included with the Pure (F9-C) will be compatible with the existing inserts PHE currently have. This is also unique to GE systems. Public Health England awarded this contract to GE Healthcare as they are the sole supplier of this equipment. PHE published an early engagement notice and received no feedback from the market.
