## Summary

St Osyth Priory & Parish Trust has successfully concluded an open procurement process for a "Historian in Residence" consultancy service, as part of its National Lottery Heritage Fund Development Phase Project. This initiative is centred on the revitalisation of the historic Grade II* Tithe Barn and Grade II Old Dairy in St. Osyth, England, to create a vibrant venue for community and celebratory events. The procurement process, classified under research and development services and related consultancy services, reached its award stage on 22nd August 2025, with the contract valued at £5,000 and spanning from 8th September 2025 to 29th August 2026. University College London has been awarded the contract, and the Trust now embarks on exploring the rich and under-researched history of the St Osyth Priory.

This tender offers substantial opportunities for growth, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and voluntary, community, and social enterprises (VCSEs) within the heritage consultancy sector. The participation of University College London exemplifies the tender's suitability for organisations with academic expertise in heritage research. Organisations involved in archaeology, heritage curation, and educational outreach can find this project of significant interest as it involves community engagement and the development of educational resources about the local heritage. This initiative not only forges avenues for historical exploration but also creates a platform for businesses to cultivate their capability in delivering culturally enriching community projects.

## Notice

With public access restored through events and the education centre after 30 years of closure, The National Lottery Heritage Fund Development Phase funded Project will focus on the redevelopment of the Grade II* listed Tithe Barn and Grade II listed Old Dairy into an attractive venue that can host weddings, celebrations, and community events alike. As part of this project, The Trust are offering a consultancy for a historian (including archaeologists, heritage librarians, museologists, archivists, teachers, and heritage architects) to explore the history of St Osyth Priory and to engage our volunteers and community with the heritage of the site. Please note, that this position is funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund Development Phase Grant. The history of the site is under-researched, but information is available from a number of sources, with the Priory specifically referenced in documents relating to the dissolution in the National Archive and British Library, St Osyth mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon name stones at Lindisfarne, and the seal of St Osyth held by Alnwick Castle. Further information is available via the collections of Colchester Castle, a Historic England report, the works of local historian Phyllis M Hendy, and previous studies by architects from City & Country. The Trust will support access to these works where possible. The Historian will undertake research into the history of St Osyth Priory; this could include existing collections held by St Osyth Museum, a related historic event or topic or respond to an identified gap in the existing body of historical work. To apply, Historians are required to submit an expression of interest to tenders@stosythpriorytrust.org.uk by 5 pm on the 4th July 2025.
