## Summary

The tender titled "Cefas: FSP69 Demersal Trawl Gear" was awarded by the Defra Network eTendering Portal, focusing on services for the fishing vessels industry. The award notice is complete, with an amount of £14,000 for the project that assesses differences in trawl gear catches in the Celtic Sea. The contract period is set to begin on 7th September 2020 and will run until 31st January 2021. The initial tender period closed on 14th August 2020, and the award was published on 3rd September 2020.

This contract presents significant opportunities for businesses in the fishing industry, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that specialise in fishing gear modifications and related services. Companies with expertise in sustainable fishing practices, bycatch reduction technologies, or those able to innovate within the regulatory framework of the Celtic Sea trawl fishery are well-suited to compete in future tenders arising from similar projects, especially given the ongoing challenges with compliance and quota management in this area.

## Notice

AWARD NOTICE: The proposal is to assess differences in catches between a 100mm cod end vs an 80mm cod end and 100mm cod end vs 100mm cod end with a 100mm square mesh panel in the Celtic Sea (7e) otter trawl fishery, and potentially explore the effect of other trawl modifications such as bridles and tickler chains. There remain challenges associated with unwanted bycatches of quota species in the Celtic Sea otter trawl fishery. New technical measures were introduced in the Celtic Sea protection zone (7f,g, parts of h and j, and two rectangles on 7e) in 2020, which meant vessels had to use a minimum 100mm cod end mesh size (previously 80) and also use a raised fishing line when haddock thresholds are met. New quota share agreements from the EU-UK negotiations may improve the situation, but it is anticipated that there will remain difficulties for fleets to keep within catch limits and comply with the landing obligation.
