## Summary

The Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) has awarded a contract to Molendotech Ltd for the development of a rapid detection method for bacterial pathogens in live bivalve shellfish. This project forms part of the Pathogen Surveillance in Agriculture, Food and the Environment (PATH-SAFE) programme, funded by the UK Government Shared Outcomes Fund. The tender falls under the industry category 'Feasibility study, advisory service, analysis' with a CPV code of 71241000. The procurement process, managed through a single tender action (below threshold), reached the award stage on 4th September 2024 with the contract commencing on 9th September 2024 and concluding on 15th January 2025. The project will see its implementation across several regions, including British Overseas Territories, Channel Islands, Europe, Isle of Man, the United Kingdom, and globally. The total contract value is £60,000 GBP.

This contract presents an important business growth opportunity for companies offering innovative bacterial detection technologies tailored for the agri-food sector. SMEs are particularly suitable for competing in tenders like this due to the bespoke nature of the services required and the project’s relatively modest budget, which is below the threshold for large-scale procurements. Companies specialising in environmental monitoring, pathogen tracking, and microbial resistance analysis can leverage this opportunity to showcase their cutting-edge solutions and contribute to the UK's efforts in ensuring food safety and public health. The involvement of a well-established entity like Cefas further validates the significance of this project and the potential for future collaborations and scale-up opportunities.

## Notice

Background: The Pathogen Surveillance in Agriculture, Food and the Environment (PATH-SAFE) programme is a UK Government Shared Outcomes Fund (SOF) research programme which aims to develop a national surveillance network, using the latest DNA-sequencing technology and environmental sampling to improve the detection and tracking of foodborne human pathogens and antimicrobial resistant microbes, through the whole agri-food system from farm-to-fork. The first phase of the PATH-SAFE programme ended on 31st March 2024. Further funding was secured for one year from 1st April 2024 to 31st March 2025. As part of recent PATH-SAFE work, led by Cefas, Foods Standards Scotland and the Environment Agency, a range of cutting-edge methods to screen shellfish for a wide repertoire of contaminants were developed. This project builds on the successes of the previous component of PATH-SAFE work, to help develop the next generation of environmental monitoring approaches for routine use. The outputs from this project will provide essential baseline data on the presence of antimicrobial resistance in this food commodity across the UK. Requirement: Cefas require a rapid bacterial detection technology in live bivalve shellfish to provide qualitative data, to correlate with microbiological culture and eDNA data for the assessment of water quality.
